Iran and Venezuela

Anti-American alliance?
On a visit to Tehran on October 19, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez consolidated his position in favor of the development of Iran's nuclear program by setting up nearly 80 economic and energy projects for an estimated $80 billion worth.

Following the meeting, Mahmud Ahmadinejad stressed the "high development potential" of their relations, which made the United States somewhat queasy.
The two countries are notorious black sheep to America.
Iran and Venezuela have already agreed to cooperate on oil and gas trade in order to replace Western firms withdrawing from the energy sector.

As influential members of Tehran-based OPEC, the two allies could play a major part in this sector. The process was apparently initiated some time ago with the visit of Iranian president in Venezuela last November and Chavez’s trips to other key stakeholders in Russia, Ukraine, Syria and Libya,.
Time will tell how these strange bedfellows will fare.

En visite le 19 octobre 2010 à Téhéran, le président vénézuélien Hugo Chavez a conforté sa position en faveur du développement du programme nucléaire de l’Iran par la mise en place de près de 80 projets dans le secteur de l’économie et de l’énergie avoisinant les 80 milliards de dollars.
Le gouvernement de Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a souligné par la suite « le haut potentiel de développement des relations » des deux pays, suscitant l’inquiétude des Etats-Unis.
En effet, plusieurs antécédents nous rappellent qu’il s’agit des deux bêtes noires de l’Amérique. Cette coopération irano-vénézuélienne a déjà mis en place de nombreux accords dans le but de concurrencer les pays occidentaux en créant une voie d’échanges commerciaux concernant le pétrole et le gaz. Tout cela, afin de remplacer les firmes occidentales en train de se retirer progressivement des secteurs bancaires et énergétiques.
De plus, membres influents de l’OPEP dont le siège se situe à Téhéran, les deux alliés pourraient avoir la mainmise sur ce secteur. Le projet semblait avoir été enclenché de longue date avec la visite en novembre dernier du président iranien au Venezuela ainsi que des visites de Chavez en Russie, Ukraine, Syrie et Lybie, autres principaux intéressés.
Reste à voir dans l’avenir comment évolueront ces relations.
