An Iranian ambassador was sentenced to 20 years in prison for planning an attack near Paris in 2018 targeting a gathering of opponents of the regime in Tehran.
Assadollah Assadi, Iranian ambassador posted in Vienna, 49 years old, was sentenced by the Belgian justice to twenty years in prison on Thursday, February 4.
Assadi was allegedly implicated in a bomb attempt on June 30, 2018 in Villepinte (Seine-Saint-Denis), the annual rally of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), a coalition of opponents including the People's Mojahedin (MEK).
Assadollah Assadi was arrested on July 1 in Germany, where investigators estimated he no longer enjoyed diplomatic immunity. Images showed him on 28 June in Luxembourg handing over a package containing a bomb to a Belgian-Iranian couple arrested later. He invoked his diplomatic status by refusing to testify at his trial, which began in November. Mr. Assadi received the maximum sentence for attempted terrorist murder and participation in the activities of a terrorist group. He did not attend the hearing at the Antwerp courthouse.
On the Persian side, the state does not recognize this conviction, claiming that the procedure initiated by the Belgian justice system was "not legitimate, because of the diplomatic immunity" of Assadollah Assadi.
At a time when Iran is trying to draw closer to the Western world, this event risks tainting its relations.

Un ambassadeur iranien a été condamné à 20 ans de prison pour avoir projeté un attentat près de Paris en 2018 qui devait viser un rassemblement d'opposants au régime de Téhéran.

Ce dernier aurait en effet été impliqué dans une tentative d'attentat à la bombe qui devait viser le 30 juin 2018 à Villepinte (Seine-Saint-Denis) le grand rassemblement annuel du Conseil national de la résistance iranienne (CNRI), une coalition d'opposants comprenant les Moudjahidines du Peuple (MEK).
Assadollah Assadi a été arrêté le 1er juillet en Allemagne, où les enquêteurs estimaient qu'il ne bénéficiait plus de son immunité diplomatique. Ces derniers étaient en possession d'images le montrant le 28 juin au Luxembourg remettant un paquet contenant une bombe à un couple belgo-iranien (eux aussi arrêtés plus tard). Il a par la suite invoqué son statut diplomatique en refusant de témoigner lors de son procès, qui a débuté en novembre. M. Assadi a reçu la peine maximale pour tentative d'attentat terroriste et participation aux activités d'un groupe terroriste. Il n'a pas assisté à l'audience au palais de justice d'Anvers.
Côté perse, l'État ne reconnaît pas cette condamnation affirmant que la procédure initiée par la justice belge n'était "pas légitime, en raison de l'immunité diplomatique" d'Assadollah Assadi.
Alors que l’Iran tente de se rapprocher du monde occidental, cet évènement risque de d’entacher ses relations.
