Iran, Turkey and Syria endorse a cease-fire

On Wednesday 18th of October, after 19 months of conflict, Iran rallied Turkey to support the new Syria peace envoy’s cease-fire proposal. It is one of the rare moments of accord between them.

Thus, like the United Nations and the Arab League’s representative Lakhdar Brahimi said, it would constitute only a tiny step toward resolving the conflict. However, the Syrian government expressed doubts that the rebels will honor this cease-fire.

The peace envoy, Mr. Brahimi, an Algerian statesman, proposed this truce with the aim of breaking the impasse and to initiate a dialogue in Syria. Turkey and Iran support him, which is important because they are enemies. Moreover, Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who met Turkey’s Prime Minister, claimed that he supports the proposal and said that “any group that derives power through war and means to continue war has no future”.

In Damascus, Jihad Makdessi, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, said that his government would welcome any “constructive initiative” from Mr. Brahimi. But some observers think that neither side wants to stop shooting and called for the people arrested or abducted during the conflict to be released.

Vers un cessez-le-feu en Syrie?

Le mercredi 18 octobre, après 19 mois de conflit, l’Iran a rejoint la Turquie qui soutient une nouvelle proposition de trêve. C’est l’un des rares moments d’accord entre ces deux pays.

Néanmoins, comme l’a souligné le représentant des Nations Unies et de la Ligue Arabe Lakhdar Brahimi, cela ne constituerait qu’un petit pas vers la résolution de ce conflit. Cependant, le gouvernement syrien s’est dit sceptique quant au fait que les rebelles honoreront ce cessez le feu.

L’émissaire de la paix, M. Brahimi, un homme d’état algérien, a proposé cette trêve dans le but de sortir de l’impasse en Syrie et pour y amorcer un dialogue. La Turquie et l’Iran l’ont acceptée en dépit de leurs désaccords.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, le président de l’Iran qui a rencontré le Premier Ministre turc a affirmé qu’il soutenait la proposition et a déclaré que «tout groupe qui tire son pouvoir de la guerre et la perpétue n’a aucun avenir».

A Damas, Jihad Makdessi, le porte-parole du ministère des Affaires étrangères, a déclaré que son gouvernement accueillerait toute «initiative constructive » de M. Brahimi. Mais certaines personnes pensent qu’aucun des deux camps n’arrêtera de tirer et qu’il serait essentiel de libérer les personnes arrêtées ou enlevées durant le conflit.

Iran to go on with nuclear program

While Leon Panetta, the US Secretary of Defense, threatens Iran with new economic sanctions, the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, announces that Iran is able to overcome economic sanctions taken by the West.

 

The Supreme Leader said the nuclear program was a pretext to impose new sanctions on Iran because of its independence in front of major powers.

 

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed that no sanction will ever stop the Iranian nuclear program and that sanctions had existed since 1979 without having ever slowed down nuclear research. However, the Supreme Leader recognized that theses sanctions had created economicproblems. Indeed, theses measures have led to a fall of the rial (the Iranian currency) against the dollar of 80% in a year and 40% in a week . This last fall of the rial caused clashes in Tehran Wednesday, October 3 between police and people who were trying to trade rial for dollarson the black market.

 

Although the program is officially intended to produce civil nuclear energy and used for medical purposes, the West suspects Iran to try to produce its own nuclear warheads. According to the ISIS (Institute for Science and International Security), Iran will produce enough enriched uranium within 2 to 4 months to make a nuclear warhead. However, additional time would be required to produce prototypes and perform tests.

L'Iran continue son programme nucléaire malgré les menaces de nouvelles sanctions économiques et une chute spectaculaire du rial

Alors que le chef du pentagone Leon Panetta menace l'Iran de nouvelles sanctions économiques, le guide suprême iranien, Ali Khamenei, a déclaré que l'Iran était capable de surmonter les sanctions économiques imposées par l'Occident.

 

Le guide suprême affirme que le programme nucléaire de n’être qu'un prétexte pour imposer de nouvelles sanctions contre l'Iran à cause de son indépendance face aux grandes puissances.

 

Ali Khamenei a affirmé qu'aucune sanction n’arrêtera jamais le programme nucléaire iranien et que les sanctions existent depuis la révolution de 1979 sans jamais avoir ralenti les recherches nucléaires. Cependant, le guide suprême a reconnu que ces sanctions avaient créé des problèmes économiques. En effet, ces mesures ont entraîné une chute du rial (monnaie iranienne) face au dollar de 80% en un an et de 40% en une semaine Cette dernière chute a entrainé des affrontements à Téhéran mercredi 3 octobre entre les policiers et des Iraniens qui essayaient de revendre des rials au marché noir contre des dollars.

Enfin, il a affirmé que le peuple iranien saurait faire échec à ces sanctions économiques qu'il juge « barbares ».

 

Bien que ce programme soit officiellement destinée au nucléaire civil, pour produire de l'énergie et pour des usages médicaux, l'Occident soupçonne l'Iran de vouloir fabriquer ses propre ogives nucléaires. Selon l'ISIS (l’Institut pour la Science et la Sécurité Internationale), l'Iran produirait assez d'uranium enrichi d'ici 2 à 4 mois pour fabriquer une ogive nucléaire. Cependant un délai supplémentaire serait requis pour produire les prototypes et effectuer les tests.
