Les milieux officiels et sportifs et le public iranien ont célébré le 51e anniversaire de la mort du légendaire lutteur Gholamreza Takhti, retrouvé mort le 7 janvier 1968, à l’âge de 37 ans. Son surnom était Jahan Pahlevan.

La cérémonie a eu lieu lundi au cimetière Ibn-e Babouyeh au sud de Téhéran, près de Shahr-e Ray, où le lutteur iranien est fêté chaque année.

« Nous sommes réunis ici pour commémorer Takhti. C’est une légende dont l’histoire perdurera 500 ans », a déclaré Reza Salehi Amiri, chef du Comité national olympique iranien.

Takhti est né en 1930 dans un quartier ouvrier du sud de Téhéran. Il a participé aux Jeux olympiques d’Helsinki en 1952 et est devenu l’un des premiers athlètes iraniens à remporter une médaille aux Jeux Olympiques. En 1956, à Melbourne, il devint le tout premier Iranien à remporter une médaille d’or avec son compatriote Emam-Ali Habibi, qui remporta sa médaille le même jour. Il a également remporté une médaille d’argent en 1960, cette fois-ci à Rome.

Takhti a remporté deux médailles d’or aux Championnats du monde en 1959 à Téhéran et en 1961 à Yokohama. Le lutteur acrobatique a également remporté une médaille d’or aux Jeux d’Asie de 1958 qui se sont tenus à Tokyo, au Japon. C’est le plus célèbre lutteur de l’histoire iranienne, connu pour son esprit chevaleresque et son fairplay. Il continue de symboliser l’essence du sport pour les Iraniens.
