Saber rattling

On December 3, 2019, the American embassy in Baghdad was attacked by Iraqi protesters and President Donald Trump accused Iran of orchestrating the attack.
In response, on the night of January 2 to 3, 2020, General Qasem Soleimani was killed in Iraq by American drone fire.
This attack, ordered by President Trump, represents a turning point in the relations between Iran and the United States and the incident conjures up the specter of a full-fledged war.
President Trump justifies his action by explaining that if General Soleimani was killed, it was not "to stop a war but to avoid starting one". Indeed, according to President Trump, General Soleimani was planning imminent attacks on diplomats and the US military.
This attack was followed on January 4, 2020 by a second air raid by the United States in Iraq against the supporters of Tehran while the Iranians were preparing to celebrate the funeral of General Soleimani.
Iran promises a harsh revenge for General Soleimani's death "at the right time and in the right place."

Le spectre de la guerre

Le 3 décembre 2019, l’ambassade américaine à Bagdad est attaquée par des manifestants irakiens. Le président Donald Trump accuse l’Iran d’avoir orchestré cette attaque.
En riposte, dans la nuit du 2 au 3 janvier 2020, le général Ghassem Soleimani a été tué en Irak par un tir de drone américain.
Cette attaque, ordonnée par la président Trump lui-même, représente un tournant décisif dans les relations entre l’Iran et les Etats Unis et un engrenage majeur faisant redouter à l’international le spectre d’une guerre.
Le président Trump justifie son action en expliquant que si le général Soleimani a été tué, ce n’était pas « pour arrêter une guerre mais pour éviter d’en déclencher une ». En effet, selon le président Trump, le général Soleimani préparait des attaques imminentes contre des diplomates et des militaires américains.
Cette attaque a été suivie le 4 janvier 2020 par un second raid aérien des Etats Unis en Irak contre les groupes pro-Téhéran tandis que les Iraniens s’apprêtaient à célébrer les funérailles du général Soleimani.
L’Iran promet une vengeance terrible pour la mort du Général Soleimani « au bon moment et au bon endroit ».
