Iranian boat attacked
The MV Saviz, an Iranian vessel, was attacked last Tuesday in the Red Sea near the Djibouti coast.
The “non-military vessel formally registered with the International Maritime Organisation” ship according to the Iranian spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh, suffered a small explosion causing minor damage, “no fatalities were incurred due to the incident, and technical evaluations on how the incident occurred and its origins are under way”.
The attack came as Iran and world powers are in Vienna for the first talks about the US potentially rejoining Tehran’s tattered nuclear deal, showing that challenges ahead do not rest merely on these negotiations.
This vessel has been the subject of much discussion in the past. Actually, Saudi Arabia has long criticized the presence of the MV Saviz in the region.
Khatibzadeh reaffirmed in Iranian previous statements that the MV Saviz is a civilian ship parked on the Red sea in order to contribute to anti-piracy efforts in this sea and on the Bab el-Mandeb strait.
Nevertheless, American and Saudi analysis show that the vessel is an important naval asset exploited by the Iranian Revolution Guard: men in uniform and a class of small boats used by the Guardians were photographed on the deck of the ship, according to an October report from the US Naval Institute.
According to the New York Times, Israel was behind this attack. A presenter of the state TV quoted a NYT article stating that an American official would have declared that Israel reportedly informed the United States of its attack on the ship Tuesday morning. Asked by journalists about Israel's involvement in the case, Israel's defense minister, Benny Gantz, twice refused to comment.
However, he added: "The State of Israel must defend itself. Whenever we find an operational challenge or an operational need, we will continue to act."
This case reinforces the tensions between Iran and the Hebrew state.

L'attaque a eu lieu alors que l'Iran et les puissances mondiales sont réunis à Vienne pour les premières discussions sur la possibilité que les États-Unis rejoignent l'accord nucléaire en lambeaux de Téhéran.
Ce navire a fait parler de lui dans le passé. En effet, l’Arabie Saoudite a longtemps critiqué la présence du MV Saviz dans la région.
Khatibzadeh a réaffirmé dans les précédentes déclarations iraniennes que le MV Saviz est un navire civil stationné dans la Mer Rouge pour contribuer aux efforts de "lutte contre la piraterie" dans cette mer et dans le détroit de Bab el-Mandeb, goulet d'étranglement crucial pour la navigation internationale.
Cependant, les analyses américaines et saoudiennes montrent que le navire est un important atout naval exploité par les Gardiens de la Révolution iraniens : des hommes en uniforme et une catégorie de petits bateaux utilisés par les Gardiens ont été photographiés sur le pont du navire, selon un rapport de l'US Naval Institute datant d'octobre.
D’après le New York Times, Israël serait derrière cette attaque. Un présentateur de la télévision d'État a d’ailleurs cité un article du New York Times, selon lequel un responsable américain aurait déclaré qu'Israël aurait informé les États-Unis de son attaque contre le navire mardi matin. Celui-ci a également déclaré que les Israéliens auraient qualifié cette attaque de représailles aux précédentes frappes iraniennes sur des navires israéliens. Interrogé par les journalistes mercredi sur l'implication d'Israël dans cette affaire, le ministre de la défense d'Israël, Benny Gantz, a refusé à deux reprises de faire des commentaires.
Il a toutefois ajouté : "L'État d'Israël doit se défendre. Chaque fois que nous trouverons un défi opérationnel ou un besoin opérationnel, nous continuerons à agir."
Cette affaire renforce les tensions entre l’Iran et l'état hébreux.
