Iran defeated in United Nations Security Council
Iran says its failure to win a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council was an "obvious injustice".
Japan defeated Iran in a secret ballot Friday to secure the Asian seat on the Council. Japan won 158 votes while Iran got 32 votes.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hasan Qashqavi told reporters in Teheran on Monday that there was "no logical reason" for Japan, which has served ten times on the Council, to "monopolize" that seat.
Israeli officials, meanwhile, who had spent the past three weeks reaffirming the United Nations leadership for being too soft on Iran, saw the result as a repudiation of Iran's legitimacy by the world body.
"The United Nation has saved itself from disgrace by preventing Iran's acceptance into the Security Council", said Kadima (the Israeli center parti) leader Tzipi Livni after Friday's vote. "Iran's candidacy in itself was unacceptable."
Israel's United Nations Ambassador Gabriela Shalev was equally blunt, saying in her statement:
"The members of the international community have demonstrated their resolve to prevent Ahmadinejad's Iran - a country that supports terrorism and threatens international peace - from a seat on the Security Council.
Iran, which is currently under three sets of Security Council sanctions over its nuclear program, may be the only country to have campaigned for a seat on the body while under censure, experts said.
Iran's United Nation mission also charged that the voting was affected by "unfair behavior and a false propaganda campaign by certain major powers".
In its statement, Iran's mission said it would continue to "call for change" and insist on "the need for a Security Council that is more democratic and better responding to the realities of the current era."

Défaite de l'Iran au Conseil de Sécurité des Nations Unies
L'Iran affirme que son échec à obtenir un siège non permanent au Conseil de Sécurité des Nations Unies était une "injustice évidente".
Le Japon a battu l'Iran à la suite d'un vote à bulletin secret vendredi pour emporter le siège asiatique au Conseil. Le Japon a obtenu 158 votes contre 32 pour l'Iran.
Le porte-parole du ministre des Affaires Etrangères Hasan Qashqavi a déclaré aux journalistes réunis à Téhéran lundi qu'il n'y avait "aucune raison logique" pour que le Japon, qui a siégé dix fois au Conseil, "monopolise" ce siège.
Tandis que les officiels israéliens, qui ont passé les trois dernières semaines à réaffirmer que les Nations Unies étaient trop laxistes envers l'Iran, ont vu dans les résultats un désaveu de l'Iran par le monde entier.
"Les Nations Unies ont préservé leur dignité en empêchant l'Iran d'accéder au Conseil de Sécurité a affirmé Tzipi Livni chef de Kadima, le parti centriste israélien, après le vote de vendredi. "La candidature de l'Iran en elle-même était inacceptable."
L'Ambassadeur d'Israèl aux Nations Unies Gabriela Shalev était également directe, affirmant dans une déclaration:
"Les membres de la communauté internationale ont démontré leur résolution d'empêcher l'Iran d'Ahmadinejad - un pays qui soutient le terrorisme et menace la paix internationale - d'obtenir un siège au Conseil de Sécurité.
L'Iran, qui est actuellement sous le coup de trois procédures de sanctions du Conseil de Sécurité à propos de son programme nucléaire, est peut-être le seul pays à avoir fait campagne pour un siège au Conseil alors qu'il encourait des sanctions, ont affirmé les experts.
