Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, an Irano-British citizen, was brought to court after finishing her 5-year prison sentence.
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been taken to court, one week after completing her prison sentence. The 42-year-old was condemned in 2016 after she was accused of espionage by the Iranian government by the Iranian government. The British government as well as herself denied this accusation. No official charges have been made public.
After these years of jail, she is again facing Iranian justice, which accuses her of propaganda against the system. According to her lawyer, the Iranian justice accused her of participating in a demonstration outside the Iranian embassy in London 12 years ago and giving an interview to the BBC Persian Service.
These accusations are disputed by the British government, actually, the British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab, called it "unacceptable and unjustifiable" that Iran has chosen to pursue this second "totally arbitrary" case, saying that the Iranian government has "deliberately put her through a cruel and inhumane ordeal".
He added: "Nazanin must be allowed to return to her family in the UK without further delay. We continue to do everything in our power to support her."
For her husband who fought since the beginning for her liberation, her wife is a pawn in a chess game, a bargaining chip. Her imprisonment is probably linked to a £400 million debt owed by Britain for an arms sale to Iran that took place before he was even born.
At the time of the Shah, Iran bought tanks from Britain but after the 1979 revolution they were not delivered.
The affair reinforces the political tensions between the UK and Iran, and more broadly between the West and the Persian nation, as the latter tries to open up to the world.

Nazanin Zeghari-Ratcliffe a comparu devant la justice iranienne dimanche, une semaine après avoir terminé sa peine de cinq ans de prison. Agée de 42 ans, elle a été condamnée en 2016 après avoir été accusée d'espionnage par le gouvernement iranien. Le gouvernement britannique ainsi qu'elle-même ne reconnaissent pas ces accusations, aucune charge officielle n'a été rendue publique.
Après ces années d'emprisonnement, elle est à nouveau confrontée à la justice iranienne l’accusant de propagande contre le système. Selon son avocat, il lui est reproché d'avoir participé, il y a douze ans, à une manifestation devant l'ambassade d'Iran à Londres et d'avoir donné une interview au service persan de la BBC.
Ces accusations sont contestées par le gouvernement britannique. En effet, le ministre britannique des affaires étrangères, Dominic Raab, a qualifié “d’inacceptable et injustifiable" le fait que l'Iran ait choisi de poursuivre cette deuxième affaire "totalement arbitraire", déclarant que le gouvernement iranien lui a "délibérément fait subir une épreuve cruelle et inhumaine".
Il a ajouté : "Nazanin doit être autorisée à retourner auprès de sa famille au Royaume-Uni sans plus attendre. Nous continuons à faire tout ce qui est en notre pouvoir pour la soutenir."
Selon son mari, qui s’est battu depuis le début pour sa libération, Nazanin Zeghari-Ratcliffe serait un pion dans une partie d'échecs, une monnaie d'échange. Son emprisonnement est probablement lié à une dette de 400 millions de livres sterling due par la Grande-Bretagne pour une vente d'armes à l'Iran qui a eu lieu avant même sa naissance.
À l'époque du Shah, l'Iran avait acheté des chars à la Grande-Bretagne mais, après la révolution de 1979, ils n'ont pas été livrés.
Cette affaire renforce les tensions politiques entre le Royaume-Uni et l’Iran et plus largement entre l’Occident et la nation perse, alors que cette dernière tente de s'ouvrir sur le monde.
