A spy for Iran
An Army interpreter serving in Afghanistan, became an agent for Iran, a court has been told. Since the latter part of 2006, Daniel James sent coded messages to an Iranian military attaché in Kabul telling him "I am at your service". In fact, the defendant's loyalty to this country wavered and his loyalties turned to Iran, the country of his birth. He was arrested in December 2006, just two months after he had made contact with Colonel Mohammad Hossein Heydari, an Iranian military assistant based at Tehran's embassy in Kabul.

When he was arrested, Mr. James was found to have a USB device with two "Nato Confidential" documents stored on it. The court heard the documents, known as Situation Reports, which provided a daily update on military operations in Afghanistan. Police found a computer disc containing seven photographs of the "highly sensitive" Predator unmanned spy plane in his room at the base in Kabul, - apparently taken unofficially in a restricted area of Kandahar air base.
Mr. James made no comment when told he was under arrest on suspicion of espionage, but later told a police officer: "The ADC might have set me up, he hates me... Captain Simon Briggs." He denies two charges under the Secrets Act of communicating information useful to an enemy and a second count of collecting such information on a USB memory stick.

Un espion pour l’iran
La justice a été informée qu’un interprète de l’armée en Afghanistan, espionnait pour le compte de l’Iran. Depuis fin 2006, Daniel James envoyait des messages codés à un militaire iranien à Kabul disant : « Je suis à votre service », son patriotisme pour l’Iran, son pays d’origine, l’ayant emporté. Il a été arrêté en décembre 2006, juste deux mois après être rentré en contact avec le colonel Mohammad Hossein Heydari, un militaire iranien basé à l'ambassade de Téhéran à Kaboul.
Au moment de son arrestation, M. James avait sur lui une clé USB avec deux documents marqués « NATO CONFIDENTIAL ». La cour a pris connaissance des documents, connus sous le nom de rapports de situation, fournissant un point quotidien sur les opérations militaires en Afghanistan. Dans sa chambre à la base de Kaboul, la police a trouvé un disque dur d'ordinateur contenant sept photographies du Predator, un drone espion « extrêmement sensible », - apparemment prises sans autorisation officielle dans une zone de haute sécurité de la base aérienne de Kandahar.
Mr James n’a fait aucun commentaire lorsqu’il a été mis en état d’arrestation pour espionnage, mais plus tard il a déclaré à la police : « L’aide de camp, le Capitaine Simon Briggs pourrait m’avoir piégé, il me déteste …».Il nie deux charges conformément à l’Acte (la Loi) : le Secrets de communiquer des informations utiles pour un ennemi et à un deuxième compte de rassembler de telles informations sur un bâton de mémoire (souvenir) USB.
