An Iranian-British woman, Ghoncheh Ghavami, 25, was arrested in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium on 20 June for taking part in a demonstration requiring that women be allowed inside. She with other women tried to attend a men’s volleyball game.
She was visiting family in Iran while working on for a charity organization teaching literacy to street children.
In the Islamic Republic, women are forbidden from watching men’s sport. A law about it was approved in 2012.
This young woman was finally released after an extensive set of questions. A few days later, the police discovered her dual nationality thanks to the documents that had been confiscated. But Iran doesn't recognize dual nationality so she was arrested again.
She was accused of “propaganda against the regime” and has been held in the Evin jail for the last one hundred days.
Last Wednesday, Ghoncheh Ghavami started a hunger strike for five days to protest against her arrest.
Her brother, Iman Ghavami, published a petition online demanding her release. Her mother Susan Moshtaghian wrote on it: “Yesterday, I finally saw my Ghoncheh. She said she's been on a hunger strike since Wednesday. God, I can't breathe...”
So far, more than 500,000 people have signed this petition.
Susan Moshtaghian also went on a hunger strike in solidarity with her daughter. She intends to protest as well against the Iranian authorities.
Iranian women are still waiting for a better freedom promised by the president.

Une Anglo-iranienne de 25 ans, Ghoncheh Ghavami, a été arrêtée au stade Azadi à Téhéran le 20 juin dernier pour avoir participé à une manifestation réclamant l’autorisation d’entrer aux femmes. En effet, elle essayait avec d’autres femmes d’assister à un match de volley masculin.
Elle était en Iran afin de rendre visite à sa famille et d’y travailler pour une association caritative apprenant aux enfants pauvres à lire et à écrire.
Dans la République islamique, les femmes ont interdiction de regarder tout sport masculin. Une loi à ce sujet a été votée en 2012.
Cette jeune femme été relâchée à la suite d’un long interrogatoire. Quelques jours plus tard, la police a découvert sa double nationalité après avoir examiné ses documents confisquées. Or, l’Iran ne reconnaît pas la double nationalité. Elle a donc été arrêtée de nouveau.
Accusée de « propagande contre le régime », elle est toujours détenue dans la prison d’Evin depuis plus de trois mois.
Mercredi dernier, Ghoncheh Ghavami a commencé une grève de la faim de cinq jours pour protester contre son arrestation.
Son frère, Iman Ghavami, a publié sur internet une pétition demandant sa libération. Sa mère, Susan Moshtaghian, a écrit sur celle-ci: «Hier, j’ai enfin pu voir ma Ghoncheh. Elle disait qu’elle faisait une grève de la faim depuis mercredi. Mon dieu, je ne peux plus respirer…»
A ce jour, plus de 500.000 personnes ont signé cette pétition.
Susan Moshtaghian fait désormais elle aussi une grève de la faim en solidarité avec sa fille. Elle veut également protester contre les autorités iraniennes.
Les femmes iraniennes attendent toujours la plus grande liberté promise par le président.
