Can war between the US and Iran really be avoided?

During the last months, the pressure between the United States and its Israeli ally and Iran has been palpable. The Iranian nuclear programme supposed to be a military one is still at the root of a dangerous conflict, so much so that many fear a war. The possibility of a strike against Iran is probably more than prospective.

The striking option is not shared by everyone. Jack Straw, the former Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Member of Parliament and of the Labour Party, considers it “inconceivable.” “It could lead to a major realignment in international relations of a kind that we have not seen up to now,” he said. He also thinks that it would be better to contain Iran. Apart from some European countries, the world is divided concerning the Iranian situation. And according to Straw, in case of a strike, it will get much worse.

According to Ronen Bergman, an Israeli journalist, his country is preparing his army for a strike that could happen in 2012. But it seems to be not that easy. In fact, it seems Israel’s intelligence agencies believe that the Iranian nuclear amenities will be immunized in nine months. Berman claims that Israel will do anything to stop the Iranian nuclear programme.

Matthew Kroenig, a former special adviser on Iran, thinks that Israel has not enough military power and that it is to the US to strike first, because their enemy would not “strike back to hard, they could lose their heads”.

Ambassador Mousavian says that more than the help of the Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran will punish its enemies and will be supported by all Muslims.

OPINION: In my opinion, Iran won’t be lie low if Israel or the US strike its nuclear facilities. The war will lead to international divisions and threaten what little peace we try to preserve in the world. Maybe Iran works on its programme only to protect itself. And the allies cannot take such a big risk only on presumption. On his side, Iran should try to negotiate and show more will to avoid a war.

Vers une guerre entre les Etats-Unis et l’Iran ?

Depuis plusieurs mois, les relations entre les Etats-Unis et son allié Israël, ainsi que l’Iran sont plus que conflictuelles. L’enjeu du conflit est le programme nucléaire de l’Iran. Beaucoup craignent une guerre, ainsi que l’éventualité d’une frappe militaire sur la République Islamique.

Certains redoutent une telle possibilité. C’est le cas de l’ancien secrétaire d’Etat aux Affaires étrangères du Royaume-Uni, Jack Straw qui la considère « inconcevable » et pense que cela pourrait mener à un bouleversement des relations internationales tel que l’on n’en a jamais vu. Contrairement au Président israélien, il pense que des méthodes moins radicales comme l’isolation seraient préférables. En dehors de quelques pays européens, les opinions sont partagées et cela ne pourrait qu’empirer.

Selon un journaliste israélien, Ronen Bergman, Israël serait prêt à frapper dés cette année et serait en train de s’armer pour cette éventualité. Mais les équipements nucléaires de l’Iran seraient au grand dam d’Israël bientôt immunisés contre les attaques. Evidemment cela n’affecte en rien la décision du gouvernement qui pour protéger sa population et éviter la naissance d’une puissance militaire nucléaire en Iran serait prêt à tout.

Des Américains ne sont néanmoins pas de cet avis et pensent que la puissance militaire des Etats-Unis est plus efficace. Matthew Kroenig affirme en effet que les Iraniens auraient trop peur « d’être décapités » s’ils répondaient trop violemment.

Cette sous-estimation ne plait bien sûr pas à tout le monde comme l’ambassadeur Mousavian qui explique que même sans l’aide du Hezbollah, le pays d’Ahmadinejad serait soutenu par les Musulmans dans leur ensemble et écraserait ses opposants.

OPINION : Si l’Iran est victime d’une frappe militaire, il sera loin d’être tendre. A tel point que la guerre qui s’en suivrait menacerait le semblant de paix mondiale restant et bouleverserait la scène internationale. Israël ne peut pas fonder des tels actes sur des suppositions, même si elles sont presque certaines. L’Iran qui ne souhaite peut-être que défendre son territoire avec son programme devrait chercher à communiquer avec ses opposants, à négocier afin d’éviter une guerre peut-être inutile.
